Toyota 86 Open Concept Teased Pre-Geneva
The next logical step in the story of the Toyota 86 / Subaru BRZ is almost upon us. In the run-up to the 2013 Geneva Motor Show, Toyota has released the teaser sketch we see here of what will be a prototype for the upcoming rear-wheel drive, compact, sports convertible.
Toyota will reveal the Toyota 86 Open Concept in Geneva to gauge customer reaction to a drop-top 86. Already proven to be a very capable and fun car, the Toyota 86, or Scion FR-S (in U.S.), is likely to profit greatly from a convertible version, which has been rumoured to be in the product lifecycle virtually since the car’s launch. There’s been no word from Subaru as to whether they’ll follow suit with the BRZ, but considering the shared production between the two, it wouldn’t be surprising.
The unveiling of the 86 Open comes more than three years after the original concept’s debut in Tokyo, which was followed by the FT-86 G and the FT-86 II concepts.
It’s not so much a matter of ‘if’, but rather ‘when’ the Toyota 86 Open reaches production, it will be the Japanese manufacturer’s first globally marketed convertible since the MR2 in 2006.
