After last month’s massive 4-million-plus Japanese recall over a component supplier providing faulty airbag sensors to Toyota, Nissan and Honda, it appears Subaru will not escape a recall of their own this month.
According to reports, Subaru says it will recall more than 10 000 of its 2013 Forester SUVs in the U.S. over defective floor mats. After checking with Subaru South Africa, we can confirm that South African vehicles are not affected because the floor mats on locally available models are not supplied from Japan.
Subaru said in its report to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (N.H.T.S.A.) in the U.S. that the resin composition of the backing on the Forester’s floor mats was defective and could cause the mats to come loose and curl up when exposed to heat.
That raises the possibility that the driver’s mat could interfere with the clutch, brake or gas pedals, increasing the likelihood of a crash. The Japanese automaker said workers noticed the problem when the vehicles arrived in the United States from Japan. Subaru will replace all four floor mats on each vehicle.
