Following our announcement last week of the first ever Dezzi Raceway Invitational meeting to take place at the new Port Shepstone circuit on 18 and 19 May, as a last minute replacement for the now defunct Knysna Hillclimb, the Auto Trader SupaDrift Championship has announced that South Africa’s top drivers will also be making their way to the Dezzi Raceway next month, to compete in the third-round of the nine-stop national series.
45 of South Africa’s top drifters will descend on Port Shepstone on 11 May, to compete in what will be Kwa-Zulu Natal’s first time hosting the Auto Trader SupaDrift Championship; a competition which is in its inaugural year as a national event. Set to thrill visitors with a bigger pool of drivers and better level of drifting than ever before, this is the result of three of South Africa’s biggest drifting clubs joining forces to form one Motor Sport South Africa (MSA) endorsed championship.
“The decision to create one national series was such a positive move for the sport of drifting in South Africa. This year we’ll see the first national champion crowned. AutoTrader has been the presenting sponsor for the past 4 years and we’re very proud to be part of the action.” said AutoTrader’s Angie Lynch.
Among the draw cards for the event will be the proprietors of the new circuit and local father and son team, Shane and Desmond Gutzeit. They will be competing alongside championship leader Tim Stephens, as well as the youngest driver in the competition, 19-year old Jason Webb. Female racing driver, Clare Vale, will be making her debut in the series this year. The stellar driver line-up is complimented with an equally thrilling new track in the Dezzi Raceway.
The SupaDrift Series was founded in 2009 by XS Promotions, but this is the first year that a national champion will be crowned. For drifters to gain maximum points, drivers must maintain control from entry to exit of a corner with the intention of gaining style points from judges and spectators. Points are determined by drift style, drift angle, the amount of tyre smoke and noise maintained around the fixed course.
