There’s not a day that goes by without speculation in the automotive world, with some rumours more exciting than others. Anything involving the Lexus LF-LC concept certainly falls into the latter category in our opinion.
The last good news we heard of the LF-LC concept was late last year, with word of plans for it to enter production. Lexus’ U.S. vice president of marketing, Brian Smith, has since confirmed the production plans, saying: “That was a concept car, and I think it surprised everybody, including us, when Japan said due to overwhelming response they decided to do it,” Smith told Wards Auto earlier this year.
Rumours are now circulating that the LF-LC could mark the revival of the ‘SC’ badge for Lexus, which was struck from the production line with the demise of Lexus 430SC in 2010.
The LF-LC is not to be confused with the Lexus LF-CC that is due to be the Japanese manufacturer’s answer to the German’s 3 Series, C-Class and A5 coupe rivals. Instead the LF-CC, or new SC as it could prove, is likely to be powered by a choice of hybrid 3.5-litre V6 with 257 kW, or a 4.6-litre V8 with 367 kW.
These engines will move the potentially new Lexus SC coupe into Porsche 911 and new Jaguar F-Type territory, which an exciting prospect. In addition, Lexus’ long-standing commitment to hybrid drivetrains means owners of the next SC could enjoy their sportscar with a cleaner conscience.
