Spied: 2014 BMW M3 Sedan

The 2014 BMW M3 Sedan is expected to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. In the meantime, however, spy photographers haven’t missed an opportunity to snap the hotly anticipated 3 Series flagship undergoing final testing.

The former BMW 3 Series Coupe is now known as the 4 Series and the performance version is therefore likely to be known as the M4 Coupe. Thus the BMW M3 name will continue in four-door sedan guise as we see in these images.

In terms of styling we can see restyled side mirrors, of course the head- and tail-light design borrowed from the current 3 Series, as well as more aggressive front and rear bumpers, with the removal of fog lights for improved air intake and the addition of quad-exhausts and diffuser at the rear.

A gap in the camouflage on the front fenders also suggests a larger side vent for improved aerodynamics and brake cooling. Other subtle details include the double slat kidney grilles and a double-bubble style roof.

The roof itself is a carbon fibre item, which has been seen on a previous test vehicle, but the addition of camo to the roof in these latest images suggests possible modifications. The carbon roof would play a key role in reducing the M3′s centre of gravity, as well as helping it to shed a suspected 100 kg off its predecessor.

Details of the car’s powerplant remain shrouded in mystery at this stage, with power speculated to be anywhere from the current M3′s 309 kW up to 335 kW. Aided by turbochargers, a 3.0-litre straight-six is expected to produce in the region of 550 Nm of torque.
