If you don’t already know, aren’t using Twitter, or both, TomTom South Africa (@TomTom_SA) offer live traffic information via their Twitter feed.
The TomTom updates include details of delays along major routes nationwide, which are fed with real-time data from the Dutch-based company’s live traffic data centre in Holland. Twitter users are updated every two minutes, or at the same rate as other TomTom LIVE devices.
The online service has helped swell the number of TomTom_SA Twitter account followers to over 4 000 in recent months and once you’ve used the service it’s not difficult to see why. @TomTom_SA followers can access regional maps of the country’s major centres by clicking on the relevant hash tags provided. The maps show traffic delays and detail such as estimated time of the delay, length of the traffic jam and the cause, such as faulty traffic lights, an accident or roadworks.
Since using the service ourselves, we’ve saved more than a few minutes thanks to a quick glance at the TomTom maps before stepping out of the office. Here are a few quick links to the Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg Central maps.
