The new Peugeot 308 was first shown back in May and is yet to make its official public debut at Frankurt next month, however, the French brand isn’t hanging about and has revealed the 308 R Concept.
With the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine from the Peugeot RCZ R Coupe beneath its bonnet, the Peugeot 308 R concept boasts performance credentials that Peugeot hope will give the Volkswagen GTI a run for its money.
The 0 – 100 km/h sprint is over in 5.9 seconds, which is 0.6 seconds faster than the standard Golf GTI. We should mention that the 308 R’s 1.6-litre engine produces 199 kW and 330 Nm of torque, sent to the front wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission.
The wheels themselves are 19-inch units fitted with 235/35 low-profile rubber. The 308 R concept rides on 26 mm lower sport suspension than the standard 308 and also has a 30 mm wider front track. The brake system has been uprated with 4-piston calipers and Alcon brake discs to slow each wheel.
Looking past the odd red and black paint scheme, we see more aggressive bumpers with larger air intakes and a rear diffuser, as well as a roof-mounted spoiler and a pair of large tailpipes.
Peugeot has not indicated whether the 308 R could make it into showrooms, but if all goes well at the Frankfurt Motor Show next month, then we suspect we’ll see a revival of the Peugeot 308 GTI in the near future.
