The Nissan GT-R (R35) has been updated almost every year since it launched in late 2007, but there’s no getting around the fact that it’s going on 6-years old. Before an all-new model arrives, however, the company is planning an even more focused GT-R NISMO version that it says is on track for 2014.
“The Nissan GT-R NISMO is the GT-R with which we pursue pure performance,” said Hiroshi Tamura, Nissan GT-R and NISMO Chief Product Specialist in a press statement released on Friday. “It is for people who search for true performance with pure motorsports flavour. Its development is on schedule, and I can’t wait to see the model introduced into the markets.”
Details of the GT-R NISMO remain under wraps for now, but you can almost guarantee it’ll be a lighter, faster and track-honed version of the supercar slayer. We suspect the NISMO will share some of the components already available with the GT-R Track Pack, which includes lighter RAYS alloys and carbon fibre components, but engineers will certainly not stop there.
In terms of an all-new GT-R, news of a successor has emerged that could mean we see a new car before the end of 2015.
Speaking to U.S. magazine Motor Trend at the Nissan 360 event, which is currently underway in Los Angeles, United States, a Nissan representative reportedly said the next-generation model would arrive in three years. The source declined to give details, but expectations are that car will debut, “well before the end of 2015.”
Whether or not the new GT-R will make use of hybrid technology to compete with the likes of the upcoming Honda NSX is unknown, but terms like, ‘stop/start’, ‘cylinder deactivation technology’ and ‘hybrid powertrain’ have been heard doing the rounds, so if nothing else, the 2016 Nissan GT-R is likely to be more fuel efficient in relation to the amount of power it will output.
