Our Little Pony: Ford Mustang Coming To S.A.

The 2014 Ford Mustang has been unveiled in detail, and it’s coming to South Africa as a RHD model, but we won’t see it in local showrooms at least until 2015. The new pony car says goodbye to the solid rear axle of old and debuts a new independent rear suspension, a four-cylinder turbocharged powerplant, and some sexy styling lines for the 21st century.

The Mustang range overseas encompasses a model with a live rear axle, a V6 and the fully-fledged V8 GT muscle car model, although it’s rumoured the majority of RHD markets (including ours) will only receive the ‘entry-level’ EcoBoost 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine. The irony is that particular base engine might very well be the pick of the bunch as far as efficiency and power is concerned. With 227kW of power and 407Nm of torque, the EcoBoost four-pot actually produces 7kW more power and 41Nm more torque than the 3.7-litre normally-aspirated V6.

This is due in part to Ford’s compact engine featuring clever EcoBoost twin-scroll turbocharger, direct injection, and variable valve timing. Few details are known about the 2015 South African-spec Mustang as yet, but overseas the iconic nameplate can be had with automatic or manual six-speed transmissions and rear wheel drive of course.
