Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe Debuts

Taking pride of place at the recent Geneva Motor Show we bring you the S-Class Coupe. From a design standpoint, trying to shrink the four-door S-Class into a modern day CL-Class Coupe is no mean feat. The new Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe remains very true to the original Coupe Concept revealed, however, and in our opinion it actually looks even better than the original concept car.

The front-end is significantly sleeker than the four-door S-Class and features complete LED headlight units. The pinched S-Class design continues to the rear where similar LED taillights are to be found, except encased in a much more aggressive rear bumper and rear diffuser package.

The side profile borrows lines we’ve become familiar with in the latest CLS-, CLA- and now S- and C-Class Mercs, except when combined with the flowing roof, and sleek glass house, there’s no doubting that the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe is a truly breath-taking car to behold. The news gets even better when you consider the lusty powertrains: the S 500 will act as the base S-Class Coupe, meaning all future models including the AMG variants will only get more aggressive from there.

The bi-turbo 4.6-litre V8 S 500 has been confirmed at 335 kW and 700 Nm of torque (with 4Matic all-wheel drive an option in Europe). Unfortunately, Mercedes-Benz has yet to release performance times for the new Coupe but even considering all the luxury, weight and style; we’re still expecting 0-100 km/h to be dusted in a brisk yet luxurious 4.8 sec before achieving an effortless limited top speed of 255 km/h. The bi-turbo S 63 AMG will be revealed shortly, as will a mental S 65 AMG version packing a bi-turbo 6.5-litre V12.

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe, like the S-Class sedan; will feature the brand’s clever Magic Body Control suspension system, as well as a totally new feature dubbed “curve tilting function.” The new tech is purported to be a first for a series production car and enables the S-Class Coupe to enter bends without needing to back off the throttle. The system apparently calculates steering angle and approach speed and reduces lateral acceleration and body roll as is necessary for the big Coupe to best navigate the bend.
