Video: A Story Of The Porsche 914/6

1976 Porsche 914/6

We’re sure you’re familiar with the Porsche 914. It could be likened to the 1970s version of the Porsche Boxster; a mid-engined roadster with the 4-cylinder engine from the 911 of its time. It was a popular entry point into the Porsche brand, as is the Boxtser today, with over 118 000 units of the 4-cylinder 914 having being sold in its lifetime. It was in fact Porsche’s top-selling model while on sale between 1969 and 1976.

A little more special, however, is the Porsche 914/6. It is powered by the 2.0-litre 6-cylinder engine from the 1969 Porsche 911T. As a result, it packed far more punch and was closer to the performance of the 911. With its mid-engined layout, it likely handled far better at that time too. The retail price was also closer to the 911, too close for many in fact, which meant that buyers opted for the entry-level 911 and Porsche eventually discontinued the 914/6 in 1972 after producing just 3 351 cars.
