Mitsubishi have all but forgotten about the Lancer Evolution and, while they produced a Tommi Makinen Edition of the Lancer Evolution VI in 2000, former WRC champion Makinen must’ve been twiddling his thumbs waiting for the next business/driving opportunity.
Well, Subaru still produce the WRX, specifically the new 2014 Subaru WRX STI that was launched at the Detroit Auto Show. It still has a big wing and the same 2.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that produces 221 kW and 407 Nm of torque. Makinen it seems has been involved with the car since the prototype stage, having driven it at the Nurburgring, but Subaru invited the ‘Flying Finn’ to Buttonwillow Raceway in California to sample their finished product.
