Video: BMW M3 GTS vs. BMW M5 Ring Taxi

BMW-M3-GTS (1)

One BMW M3 GTS owner recently found himself behind a BMW M5 ‘Ring Taxi’ on the famed Nordschleife and took the opportunity to stick to the sedan’s rear. There are a number of interesting aspects to this match up.

The first is that the M3 GTS is the most potent road-going version of the E92, with a 331 kW 4.4-litre V8 engine, roll cage, race seats, harness belts, a 7-speed dual clutch gearbox, revised rear differential and a host of aerodynamic tweaks. It’s a road-legal race car for customer teams and privateers.

The second is that the BMW M5 is a far heavier, full fat so to speak, four-door family saloon on street rubber and stock running gear. Yes it may have 412 kW and 680 Nm of torque, but in addition to its 380 kg weight penalty over the GTS, it’s also carrying 3 passengers.

Finally, Ring Taxis are driven by BMW-trained drivers. All of them are professionals who’ve done countless laps of the Nordschleife, so even if you have a car that can keep up with the mighty M5, Matching the skills of its driver is a challenge of its own.
