We can’t think of another manufacturer that’s chalked up as many race wins as Porsche have in the history of motorsport. To do that you need to be “in it to win it” so to speak, and in 1978 this philosophy took Porsche to the East African Safari Rally in the 911 SC Safari.
The rally prepped Porsche 911 SC wasn’t that different to the road-going version of the time, having been sent off to Africa with just a few necessary tweaks that included raised suspension, off-road tires, extra headlights and a roll-cage. Porsche cam pretty close to winning this event too, but had to settle for second after a rock was kicked up and damaged the rear suspension shortly before the finish line.
