The 2015 Ford Focus RS coming to South Africa with drift mode

 

Ever since we saw Ken Block spectacularly slide the 2015 Ford Focus RS (watch it here) around in his usual cowboy style, we’ve been left wondering how he managed to unstick the car’s seriously grippy all-wheel drive. His previous car, the Fiesta, was customised for the job. It ran complex differentials and adjustable power bias. The Focus RS… well that was factory stock.

Well the secret’s now out. The new Focus RS has a Drift Mode, along with two other modes Normal and Sport. Now we don’t know the specifics on how this Drift Mode works but presume it is something not much more complicated than a simple torque vectoring adjustment. Think along the lines of the Subaru’s DCCD (Driver Controlled Centre Differential) system with programmable settings for power fore and aft of the car’s centre. Let’s see if this turns out to be more credible than the terrible gimmick it runs the risk of becoming.

Ford then announced that the Focus RS will be equipped with launch control – an absolute necessity when aiming to get the best 0-100km/h times. If only the Focus ST (due in South Africa mid 2015) had one of those…
