The McLaren 570S Coupe has been revealed as part of McLaren’s Sport Series – code for entry-level Porsche 911S and Audi R8 competitor. Also Mercedes GT AMG contender. Above McLaren’s Sport Series sits Super Series where presumably the 650S sells and then the Ultimate Series where cars like the P1 are marketed. The McLaren 570S is made from lessons handed down from the other two tiers so it should be rather good. The new McLaren 570S will help the brand reach a target of 4000 cars per year.

There isn’t much sign of cost cutting. The McLaren 570S retains the same V8 3.8-litre turbo used in the 650S and P1. Output is believed to circle 419kW and 600Nm which allows for 0-100km/h to happen in 3.2s, 0-160km/h in 6.3s and a top speed of 320km/h. The McLaren 570S, at 1313kg, is also light and the carbon fibre design results in a benchmark 319kW per tonne. Carbon ceramic brakes are standard.

Separating it from other McLaren models is a greater level of comfort. The interlinked suspension is replaced by double wishbones, the interior features more storage space, there’s 144-litres of luggage space and a 7-inch touchscreen to compliment the audio system. McLaren has even modified the door sills to make it easier to get in and out of.

Speaking at the launch of the new car, McLaren’s executive director for global sales and marketing Jolyon Nash said: “This is probably the most important car in our short history. It’s a game changer in the segment and will transform and double our business.” Nash says McLaren’s sales have jumped from 150 units in 2011 to 1649 units in 2014, and company was profitable in its third year of business.

Nash also poured cold water on any suggestion of McLaren developing an SUV: “In the future we will not be manufacturing or developing an SUV. We know what we’re good at, making cars that are breathtaking to drive.”
