News: Range Rover set new records at Upington

As we’ve reported many times over, there is a 4900m runway at Upington Airport and Jaguar/Land Rover have spent the last few weeks breaking production-car land speed records with each of their models. Incidentally up the road at Hakskeen Pan, JLR is assisting the Bloodhound land speed project, using the F-Type as the official data and communications car. They also tested the AWD F-Type there.

There was one obvious record missing – the fastest 4X4. Their turbocharged 4.4SDV8 with 250kW/740Nm managed an average speed of 213.53km/h. Not satisfied Range Rover took their petrol powered 5.0-litre supercharged V8 to an average speed of 250.62km/h.

Thanks to its lightweight aluminium architecture,we would go as far as saying that the Range Rover Sport is the only car in the world that can safely do 250km/h, carve up mountain passes, easily scale rocky trails, cross water as deep as 850mm, and tow a horse box,” said Lisa Mallett, Marketing and Communications Director at Jaguar Land Rover South Africa and sub-Sahara Africa. “With that breadth of capability it really is a super car. Plus those abilities don’t come at the expense of luxurious Oxford leather trim, satellite navigation and a Meridian audio system.”

We think that’s the last of it. Time to return the airport to its primary function…
