Far too often we hear about these blistering Nurburgring times but never see them for ourselves. We simply have to believe that the guy holding the stopwatch was sufficiently awake, just like we must assume that the driver is of a worthy calibre. With the Civic Type R we have video proof courtesy of on-board camera and first impressions are positive.

Admittedly this one is not entirely stock – there’s a roll cage for instance – but Honda say it doesn’t affect rigidity and they’ve compensated for the weight. In short, the regular Civic Type R sold to public should be capable of matching it.

Oh and the record? Well Honda said they wouldn’t settle until they had smashed the record for a FWD turbo hatch. That record was previously held by the Megane Trophy R with 7:54.36. Job done by Honda (7:50.63) by nearly four seconds!

The Civic Type R will be on sale in South Africa towards the end of 2015
