eCall systems will reduce motoring fatalities
BMW eCall Emergency System is already fitted to new models
Drivers and passengers involved in car accidents are likely to have a higher rate of survival from 2018. This is not due to more airbags, stronger cell structures or crash avoidance systems but credited to a system known as eCall.
eCall Emergency Call Services will automatically alert medical assistance if the car is involved in a serious accident. Medical help can be dispatched seconds after the accident, even if the driver is unconscious, thereby shaving vital minutes off the response time.
eCall has already been fitted to some models in Europe but as of March 2018 it will be gazetted as mandatory in all new cars and vans. Early fears that third parties would have access to the vehicle’s data and the unconsented gathering of personal information, has been ruled out. All vehicle owners will have legal protection against such foul practices.
It is estimated that eCall could reduce vehicle fatalities by 10 a year. We anticipate that this technology will soon become a global standard. It is likely the beginning of a reaching a goal of zero automotive fatalities.
