Launch excitement is palpable with the Citroen C4 Cactus due to arrive in South Africa later this month. This car will be a tough act to follow – it is, hands down, one the most beguiling models to be launched in 2015. And it seems we’re not the only ones impressed by those innovative bumps (goodbye door dings) and simple, lightweight design because the C4 Cactus has just won World Design of the Year. Citroen has won this award before in 2006 with the C4 Coupe while the C4 Cactus has notched up over thirty international awards.

Alexandre Malval, Citroën’s Style Director, had the honour of receiving the award. “Each year, the ‘World Car of the Year’ jury awards this prize to the new car with the most innovative design that challenges the conventional codes. C4 Cactus is a cool, optimistic and original car, with a unique personality, that offers a genuine alternative to conventional saloons. C4 Cactus is designed to reconcile practicality and a cool look. It’s pure, smooth expanses are animated by graphical features that all serve a purpose, like the Airbump® or the light signature.”

We don’t know all the details yet but have poked around a few early homologation units and each time walked away convinced that Citroen is onto something great. We can tell you that the C4 Cactus will be driven by a 1.2-litre 88kW/205Nm turbo petrol engine. We’ve already driven it in the 308 but the C4 Cactus weighs 100kg less than the 308, resulting in an even better power/weight ratio.

We will be at the launch of the Citroen C4 Cactus later this month with the first road impressions.
