New bumper, grille, lights?
More than that. The old Lexus RX was, despite being their best-selling model, far from benchmark but the fourth generation, 2015 Lexus RX has more cabin space attributed to the longer wheelbase. Lexus also brags about providing greater levels of comfort and some of the best cabin materials available. The design carries a new spindle grille, fog lights, LED lights, 20-inch alloys and enhanced aerodynamic profile. Like all current models the theme is aggressive but runs the risk of being too fussy and creased for this premium and traditionally conservative market.
What’s significant?
The 12.3-inch screen remains the best in business, even if the controller is far from it, and rear seats can recline as an option. Additional strengthening to the body results in athletic dynamics and the majority of Lexus RX models will come fitted with Adaptive Variable Suspension which also adjusts steering feel. An active stabilizer bar on F-Sport models could prove to be genius.
Early verdict
Pity there’s no version of the 2.0-litre turbo motor found in the smaller Lexus NX. That leaves buyers with a choice between an (upgraded) 3.5-litre V6 petrol and a hybrid version of the same engine. That could be the Achilles’ heel against the current diesel and small turbo offerings. Aside from being more spacious, the Lexus NX manages to pull off the styling with more confidence and should offer similar drive dynamics and comfort for a lot less. The Lexus RX will be in South Africa near the end of 2015.
