Volvo XC90 hybrid betters rivals’ C02

Volvo is about to crush the efficiency claims made by its competitor the Audi Q7 e-tron Quattro Plug-in. The Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid emits just 49g/km – lower than Volvo’s first claim of 57g/km. Volvo is a renowned leader in low emission engine design and currently offers a range of models that don’t just slide under minimal tax law, but comfortable cruise under it.

Volvo is said to be keeping the other figures close to their chest, waiting for Audi to officially release the Q7 e-tron which emits 50g/km.

The engine outputs are closely matched; Audi’s 3.0-litre V6 turbo diesel manages 189kW and 600Nm with electric motors adding 93kW and 350Nm. The Volvo XC90 by comparison churns out 234kW and 400Nm from its four-cylinder supercharged engine. Electric motors provide 60kW and 240Nm.

Although the Audi has the further range on electric drive, it is the Volvo which is the faster of the two, nipping to 100km/h in 5.9 seconds.
