So, you’ve just bought your brand spanking new Volkswagen Golf GTi Performance Pack Edition, and you’re extremely excited to hit the road and own it. After a long day of annihilating every BMW 320i and Audi A4, you pull up next to a Mercedes A45 AMG Edition 1. You confidently switch on the launch control and traction control becomes a thing of the past. The green light flashes and all you hear is tyre screech… And you lose.
This is the part where the beefy Volkswagen Golf R400 concept comes in. A production version of the Volkswagen Golf R400 is in the pipeline following a statement released by Jakob Neusser. No launch date has been released for the diabolical Volkswagen Golf R400, which in its concept state produced 294kW and 450Nm from the expertly re-engineered 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged power plant, plucked from the current Volkswagen Golf R.
The f R400′s power graces the tarmac through all four-wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox. Driving purists will rejoice in the fact that a manual spec’ will be available, although finding a gearbox capable of handling the immense figures put out by the Volkswagen Golf R400′s engine is one of the main reasons as to why this car isn’t on the road already. A six-speed DSG ‘box is also being considered to increase the global appeal of the Volkswagen Golf R400, although the current Volkswagen Golf R DSG gearbox can only handle 380Nm of torque, 70Nm less than the R400.
Volkswagen never fails to impress from a performance stance either sporting an impressive 0-100km/h time of 3,9 seconds, and a top speed of 280km/h, placing it in the ring with the Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG, the BMW M235i, the upcoming Ford Focus RS and the latest Audi RS3.
