News: Audi TT Clubsport with electric turbos
Audi’s concept TT Clubsport Turbo has been described as a technology demonstration of what we can expect to see from Audi in upcoming models.
The 2.5-litre five cylinder turbocharged engine, which currently does duty in the RS3 and Q3 RS, differs mostly by the fitment of electric turbochargers for zero lag and instant response. Audi’s head of research and development, Ulrich Hakenberg spoke out about the new design. “Electric turbocharging signifies a new dimension. We are close to production readiness with this technology with our diesel engines. Now we are presenting it with a petrol engine, too. We are the first car maker to do this.”
Providing power for the electric turbochargers is a 48V electrical system. Mounted in the boot sits a lithium-ion battery which recovers kinetic energy through the car’s braking and trailing throttle inputs. This is then fed to the turbos.
The Audi TT Clubsport is believed to make around 441kW and hurtle to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds. Top speed is estimated at around 300km/h.
