Website blunder previews Camaro convertible

Camaro convertible unlikely to come to South Africa

Someone at Chevrolet has itchy fingers. Posting a picture of the Chevrolet Camaro convertible on their official website a few days before the car’s official reveal. By the time the picture was removed it had already appeared on several motoring sources.

The sixth generation Camaro convertible is shorter, narrower and lower compared to the model it replaces. It’s also 90kg less flabby thanks to GM’s Alpha platform , extensive use of aluminium and a completely new five-link rear suspension. The fastback styling comes from over 350 hours of windtunnel testing, resulting in an unmistakable yet aggressive shape. Interior is a mix of traditional and modern features with the use of analogue dials juxtaposing the two 8-inch digital screens and Chevrolet MyLink system.

Like the Ford Mustang it competes with, the Camaro convertible is powered by a wide spread of engines. The range begins with a small capacity 2.0-litre turbo engine of 202kW and 400Nm, making it the most efficient Camaro on sale. Sadly it’s also the first Camaro to require an artificial engine note. That’s not a problem for the 3.6-litre V6 with 246kW and 384Nm. Here better fuel consumption is achieved through cylinder deactivation technology, also making its debut. The SS fitted with the 6.2-litre V8 tops the range with 309kW and 530Nm. The SS is the only model to come with adjustable dampers and Brembo brakes.

While South Africa will get the Ford Mustang, it is unlikely that the same will be true of the Chevrolet Camaro which remains rooted to left-hand drive configuration.
