Ludicrous Tesla bumps the amperage

Tesla now comes with electrifying Ludicrous Mode

Insane. Ludicrous. What’s the difference? Well between 10 and 20 per cent in terms of performance according to Elon Musk, company CEO of Tesla Motors, revealed about the Tesla S P85 D.

Tesla’s high performance model has until now been sold with an ‘insane mode’ but the new Tesla S P85 D can be upgraded to a ‘ludicrous’ mode for about  $5000, or $10 000 for new buyers. Prices for European markets have not been confirmed.  The hardware upgrade includes a more robust fuse to handle the increased electric charge, which jumps from 85kWH to 90kWH.

What does that mean on the road? By raising the car’s amperage (normal speak for turbo pressure) the Tesla Model S P85D in ‘ludicrous’ mode should cover 0-100km/h in 2.8 seconds and pull 1.1G of acceleration.  We don’t know if 1.1Gs is any good but can vouch for the acceleration time being about two tenths quicker. Top speed has been raised to 250km/h – about 30km/h more than ‘insane’ models. The upgrade doesn’t just improve power but is believed to add about 7 per cent to range.

Elon Musk also revealed that the upcoming crossover Tesla Model X will also come with this high performance mode capable of propelling it to 100km/h in 3.3 seconds.
