Chevrolet has announced plans to drop the Aveo name in North America.
While the move isn’t much of a surprise, considering its less than stellar reputation, the Aveo name will continue to be used in over 50 countries. However, in North America (Canada, Mexico and the United States) the car will be known as the Sonic.
According to Chris Perry, vice president of Chevrolet U.S. Marketing, “The Sonic represents a new beginning for Chevrolet in the small car segment and so we felt it was time to give it a new name. The new car is roomy, stylish and fun to drive, and Sonic is a youthful, energetic name that helps convey what this vehicle is about.”
The 2012 Sonic will go into production next year at GM’s Lake Orion assembly plant in Michigan.
