Suzuki has unveiled its new Swift Sport in Frankfurt, based on the all-new Swift released last March. Its predecessor is an SACarFan favourite and Suzuki has kept the recipe the same – evolution rather than revolution.
The engine is a development of the previous generation’s 1.6-litre unit. It now develops 100 kW at 6 900 r/min and 160 Nm at 4 400 r/min, representing 8 kW and 12 Nm rises respectively. These increases are achieved thanks to the addition of a variable intake system, optimisation of the intake VVT and increased valve lift. The engine is mated to a new six-speed manual gearbox, replacing the old five-speed, which Suzuki claims has a lighter and more positive shift action. The engine development and new gearbox result in CO2 emissions that are down around 11 per cent, falling from 165g/km to 147g/km. There is also a revised exhaust system.
Suzuki says that their new 2012 Swift Sport handles noticably better than its predecessor, thanks to a newly designed rear suspension that has been designed to increase cornering stability at the rear. Increased front and rear spring rates, combined with added rebound springs at the front, significantly increase stability by reducing body roll, Suzuki claims. Stability will be further aided by a wheelbase that is 50 mm longer (now 2 430 mm).
In terms of styling, the latest Swift Sport features a new grille and bumper, together with new finned fog lamp bezels and high-intensity discharge headlamps. The 2012 Suzuki Swift Sport sits on 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, which are 1 kg lighter than before, and comes equipped with 7 airbags, ESP (Electronic Stability Program) as standard, as well as ABS and EBD. Inside the cabin are newly designed sport seats in an exclusive fabric, together with a five-dial instrument cluster.
The price and availability of the 2012 Suzuki Swift Sport will be announced at a later date.
