Honda Micro Commuter EV Concept

At the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show, Honda presented its latest interpretation of a city car, which is called the Micro Commuter.

The new concept is a tiny three-seater, 1+2 to be exact, measuring 2 500 mm in length, 1 250 mm in width and 1 430 mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 1 860 mm.

The 1+2 seating configuration of the Honda Micro Commuter means there’s really only space for the driver, as the other two seats don’t look to offer much comfort.

Naturally, Honda powers the new Micro Commuter with an electric motor (regenerative braking system included), juiced by a 3.3 kWh lithium-ion battery. With an output of 16.7 kW, the new Micro Commuter has a top speed of 60 km/h.

Being a city dweller, the Honda Micro Commuter doesn’t need to travel fast, but it does need to keep up with traffic off the line. Honda say the Micro Commuter’s 0 – 60 km/h sprint time is 7.4 seconds, not exactly zippy, but adequate we’d imagine. The Micro Commuter has a range of 60 km and takes just an hour to re-charge, which, in percentage terms, is better than some larger EV’s with less than double the range.

The Honda Micro Commuter also boasts a handy feature in that it’s battery can be removed and used to power your laptop, although how this would work in practical terms is anyone’s guess, with laptop batteries being very specific to the make and model.
