The open-top version of the Golf GTI has not been built since the first generation, but according to a report it could be set for a comeback. Volkswagen are apparently planning to unveil a Golf GTI Cabriolet at the Geneva Motor Show next month. It will be the final model variant of the sixth generation Golf before it is replaced starting from next year.
The world was given an initial look at the possible model at the Wörthersee 2011 when the German brand unveiled a concept version of the model. Rumors since then have been scarce, but if the report proves to be correct the concept could be heading to production.
The concept was equipped with a 2.0-litre TSI engine that develops 155 kW and 280 Nm of torque. It enabled the car to accelerate from 0 – 100 km/h in around seven seconds, before hitting a top speed of roughly 240 km/h.
