Nissan Leaf Police Car

The Portuguese police will be quietly sneaking up on criminals in their new, zero emissions, Nissan Leaf patrol cars. We know what you’re thinking, and so no, charging shouldn’t be a problem, as the Nissan Leaf will be used by the PSP (Polícia de Segurança Pública) who are responsible for policing the country’s urban areas.

Nissan says the PSP is the first police force in the world to implement a fleet of the electric cars, a statement echoed by the National Director of the Portuguese Police who said, “We pride ourselves in being the first police force in the world to incorporate cars with zero-emission technology as part of our 5 000 vehicle fleet…, we want to continue reducing pollution in large urban centres and the introduction of the 100 percent electric Nissan Leaf sets a new benchmark for our fleet.”

A total of eight Nissan Leafs have been delivered in full police regalia and are set to enforce the law in some of Portugal’s more crowded cities with zero CO2 emissions. The Leaf is expected to perform well in low-speed sprints where the immediate torque from its electric motor will allow it to launch from a standstill to around 50 km/h much quicker than many vehicles on the road.
