Hennessey VR1200 Twin-Turbo Coupe

Sometimes we hate General Motors for giving us a taste for Cadillac in South Africa and then taking it away so abruptly. More so when we see the Cadillac CTS-V Coupe and especially when we see this awe-inspiring limited edition CTS-V Coupe from American mega-tuners Hennessey.

The absolutely devilish 895 kW (1 200 American horsepower) version of the Cadillac CTS-V Sport Coupe is one of just twelve that will be produced.  As you would imagine, a car of such maniacal tuning is going to feature a substantial set of upgrades. These include wholesale modifications to the engine, gearbox, suspension, braking, aerodynamics and a few interior upgrades for good measure.

You can think of it as a sort of American, Black Series version of the Mercedes-Benz C63 Coupe,  just with almost double the power and looks that might resemble a C63 AMG Coupe Black Series that’s gone to hell and back. What Hennessey actually do to kick off the modification is remove the basic, 6.2-litre V8 LSA from General Motors and replace it with a 427 cubic inch all-aluminium V8. That’s a 7.0-litre V8 to you and I.

Hennessey then add to it: forged aluminium pistons; steel connecting rods; steel crankshaft, ARP main studs and head bolts; high flow cylinder heads and a Hennessey VR1200 camshaft. Hennessey love to go the forced induction route and here, yet again, they’ve garnered some extra power from a twin turbocharger setup, with an upgraded fuel system, injectors and waste-gates.

The exhaust system includes stainless steel downpipes, an air-to-water intercooler and a high flow air induction system. The entire system gets engine management calibration (we bloody well hope so) and is even dyno and road tested before receiving a 3-year / 60 000 km warranty.

The boost is actually adjustable between 595 kW, 745 kW and the full blown 895 kW. Apparently, on a dyno test, the VR 1200 Coupe recorded a maximum of 1 500 Nm of torque. We’d like to see that dyno sheet, because that’s the type of torque that could break stuff in the dyno room and the rumble earth’s core.

Claimed performance figures in ‘ideal conditions’ are 0 – 100 km/h in 2.9 seconds, a quarter-mile time of 10.2 seconds and a top speed of 390 km/h. As a point of reference, the VR1200′s 0 – 100 km/h sprint time is still o quicker than the 2012 Nissan GT-R with a measly 397 kW, highlighting the importance of traction.

The manual transmission is upgraded, but for an extra US$20 000, Hennessy will fit an automatic box. For some attempt at slowing that rampant power, the VR 1200 Coupe uses Brembo 385 mm ceramic rotors with 8-pistons at the front and 6-pistons at the rear.

The Cadillac’s suspension is lowered front and rear with upgraded swaybars and a tuned version of Hennessey’s magnetic ride control. Those super aggressive looks are then completed by the carbon fibre front splitter, rear diffuser, front and rear fender extensions and, our favourite part, the massive heat extractor vents on the bonnet.

How about the expected price for all this America Hennessey Cadillac awesomeness? Try US$295 000, or R2.7 million. Even so, we think it’s car tuner pornography. Great job Mr. Hennessey.
