Nissan GT-R Gets Litchfield Performance Upgrade

Litchfield Nissan GT-R

It’s no secret we love Nissan GT-R tuning news here at SA Car Fan and now British tuning moguls, Litchfield Motors, have just announced their full range of tuning packages for the ballistic darling of the tuner world. The firm says they’re focusing their attentions on providing the best tuning for the GT-R’s big VR38 engine. They can do this by having recently acquired their own machining and production facility.

What Litchfield does for its ‘Sport Engine’ is supply a GT-R with new bearings, engine gaskets and seals. The Sport engine features Litchfield GT-R Pistons produced by alloy manufacturer, Capricorn. Litchfield GT-R engine rods with unique oil grooves are there to cool the pistons for improved performance and Beryllium copper small ends help reduce friction. The reworked engine internals also get a dynamically balanced crank to insure smooth running throughout.

Litchfield will blue-print the engine block with oil and water ways that are smoothed, enlarged and cleaned, to remove original casting marks. A high pressure oil pump helps with more consistent flow at high revs to assist the ported and polished cylinder heads. A Litchfield sport camshaft with increased lift and duration helps maintain idle control without sacrificing low speed performance, while custom valve springs ensure correct valve pressure.

A customer can decide the overall ferocity of the engine tuning. One package features a Litchfield ‘Rod Upgrade’. This upgrades the connecting rods in the engine allowing it to produce considerably more power than with standard OEM parts. Litchfield estimates around 596 kW (or 800 hp) with an equally impressive amount of torque. U.K. customers also get a Litchfield warranty package including in the price of £4 387 (or R60 000 in a direct currency conversion).

If that’s a little tame for your Nissan GT-R, the second package increases the power even further, where the engine is rebuilt and balanced in-house to competition standards. Litchfield say the revised engine provides enough strength for a comfortable 635 kW (or 850 hp) with a good service life. Litchfield will even throw in special running-in oil and run in the car for customers personally. The price for this package is £6 397 (roughly R89 000).

Another package builds on the above one with upgrades that are even more substantial. It offers 745 kW (1 000 hp) setup for the GT-R and the package that reputedly been tested at great expense by Litchfield engineers on the road and at the Nurburgring. This package is available at a very reasonable £11 994 (or R165 000).

The Litchfield tuning almost certainly provides one of the cheapest and fastest routes to a magical 1 000 hp car that money can buy. Litchfield say they aren’t going to stop there however. They say they are working on a final package called the ‘Red Top’ engine which will up displacement to between 4.0-litres and 4.6-litres.
