Lamborghini turns 50 this year and they built a special car for themselves to celebrate that fact. It was called the Lamborghini Veneno, it debuted at Geneva, and its been widely recognised in the media as a horrible and unattractive failure.

Thankfully they’re only making three of them. So, Lamborghini, being the persistent bunch that they are, decided to have another go at a 50th anniversary car and this one is much better.

In classic Sant’Agata fashion Lamborghini will be celebrating its Golden Jubilee in exuberant style at the Shanghai Motor Show with this Lamborghini Aventador LP720-4 50th Anniversario Edition.

The anniversary special features ‘Giallo Maggio’ yellow (‘Yellow May’ in Italian) paintwork and a new black aero package along the front, rear and side sills of the car. The interior copies the distinctive colour scheme of the exterior.

The Yellow May paint is said to have a strong glitter effect. The name of the paint is a reference to the month Lamborghini was founded, May 1963, and yellow was chosen because most Lamborghini’s in the 50 year history of the Italian company left the factory in yellow, more than any other colour.

Fitted with an aggressive front spoiler and rear diffuser, the aerodynamic bits are crafted from light weight carbon fibre that contrasts with the colour of the body work and carries the ‘50’ emblem as a unique finishing touch. We do expect the aero parts to provide added aerodynamic prowess at high speed.

Better still, this historic model will be a bit more exclusive thanks to its limited 100-unit production run. With 720-horsepower as the name suggests from the V12 engine (20-horses more than standard and 30-horses less than a Veneno), matched to the 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox, it’ll still get to 100 km/h in less than 3.0 seconds and top out around the 350 km/h mark.

Prices have not been announced yet, but count on the Aventador base price with a significant premium for the exclusive 50th Anniversario edition, when it is unveiled in Shanghai.
