The likeable, versatile and easy to use Panda has sold more than 6.4 million units over 31 years and has been a best-seller that’s contributed to Fiat becoming a leader in the small car segment. The current Panda launched in 2007 and now the third generation of the Panda model offers more quality in terms of space, comfort, functionality, technology and safety features.
Now in its third generation, the new Panda maximises use of interior space, while continuing to be a very compact car. The Panda has grown a few centimetres to ensure the highest standards of safety: with a length of 3,65m, a width of 1,64m and a height of 1,55m, and it has a spacious boot: 225 litres, increasing to 260 litres with the sliding rear seat in the fully forward position and 870 litres with the backrest of the rear seats folded down.
From launch, the new model is only available with a 51 kW 1.2-litre ‘Fire’ petrol engine. Performance figures are not fiery, however, with 100 km/h coming up in well over 14 seconds. The Panda is offered in two trim levels (Pop and Lounge), 7 body colours, 3 interior trim colours and 14-inch steel and 15-inch alloy wheels. The new features include an optional “Blue&Me TomTom LIVE” that combines the advantages of an infotainment system which is integrated and connected with those of the portable navigation system, opening the doors to connectivity.
On the exterior, Fiat says the new Panda conveys freshness in addition to a strong ‘Italian style’ that makes it instantly recognisable from first glance. The slightly convex bonnet joins with the elegant horizontal grille and the new front headlamps with a rounded shape that resembles a smiling face. The same aesthetic elements also express the family feeling of the latest Fiat models.
On the inside, the passenger compartment is designed as a single, comfortable space. Proof of that is the placement of graphic patterns decorating the door panels and roof of the car. In this same way the radio interface sports a pleasant look, and all controls and buttons are grouped into two islands for easier use.
To guarantee the protection of the occupants, the new Panda offers four airbags standard (front and window protecting the head), ABS complete with B.A.S. (Brake Assist System), front seat belts with pretensioner and load limiter. ESC (Electronic Stability Control) complete with Hill Holder system that aids the driver in uphill starts while keeping the brake locked for about 2 seconds, in this way making starting off easier, is also available.
The 51 kW and 102 Nm of torque, 1.2-litre ‘Fire’ engine, has continuously variable valve timing and fuel consumption and CO2 emissions are 5.2 L/100 km and 120 g/km and the engine is combined with a 5-speed manual transmission. The new Panda offers a McPherson strut layout at the front. Fiat says it’s been lightened and contributes to high level crash performance during a high-speed and low-speed collision, pedestrian and insurance impact. The front suspension also has a new stability bar that improves its efficiency.
The rear torsion axle suspension is fitted with larger bushes which guarantee greater comfort on bumpy roads and improved noise insulation without detracting from road holding. The shape was studied to optimise absorption of the longitudinal bumps, without penalizing the other elastic property-kinematic performance aspects of the rear suspension.
The new Panda offers the innovative Blue&Me hands-free with Bluetooth system that includes voice recognition, USB port, MP3 player and SMS interpreter. Blue&Me allows simple pairing of up to five mobile phones. Fiat offers the all-new Panda with a 3 year / 100 000km full maintenance plan and warranty. Panda pricing starts at R139 990 for the Pop version and R154 990 for the Lounge, including VAT and CO2 tax.
