Just a few years after Mercedes-Benz decided to discontinue the CLK badge, and go with C-Class Coupe designation instead; according to reports it appears as though the CLK-Class is gearing up for an unexpected return. Bizarre considering the C-Class Coupe has by no means been the worst performing model wearing the three-pointed star. We’re not complaining though because this allows us to show pictures of one of our favourite Mercedes-Benz’s; the CLK 63 AMG Black Series.
We for one weren’t bowled over by the tall backend of the current C-Class Coupe, but the driving quality is nothing we’d want to see altered too much. The return of the CLK-Class will be based on the next-generation C-Class two-door. As far as details about the car is concerned, the plan for the returning CLK-Class is to slot back into direct competition with the BMW 4-Series and the upcoming Audi A5.
Mercedes-Benz has officially made mention that it wants to simplify its naming system going forward. Two-door prototypes of the W205 C-Class two-door/CLK have already been spotted, and if the CLK name is to be making a return, this would prove to be the best chance to do so. Much like the A-Class Coupe or CLA-Class, will have downsized turbo engines. The C-Class and CLK0-Class will reportedly include versions of the familiar diesel, turbo petrol and beefier 2.0-litre turbo for the most potent vehicle in the range.
With the arrival of the new W205 C-Class will undoubtedly come new petrol engines in the form of a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6 and a new 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 to replace the normally aspirated 6.2-litre of the current C63 AMG model. Should Mercedes-Benz bring the CLK-Class back into the fray? If they produce cars as memorable as the CLK 63 AMG Black Series pictured here, we say bring it on.
