Mercedes-Benz South Africa has introduced a few updates for the SLK, including the ‘AMG Sport Line’ package.
The new SLK AMG Sport Line aims to add more driving enjoyment to open top motoring. The exterior delivers a sportier appearance through the addition of more muscular front and rear bumpers, bolder side skirts, 18-inch wheels, as well as headlamps with dark surrounds and dark-tinted tail lights.
The interior receives vertical fluting or shallow grooves on the seats, which also feature colour-coded topstitching. For no additional charge, contrast stitching, red seat-belts and perforated leather on the steering wheel are also available. A sporty instrument cluster in “chequered flag” design, black velour floor-mats with red piping and an AMG logo round off the interior enhancements.
Beneath the skin, the AMG Sport Line package improves the car’s dynamics through a lowered sports suspension with stiffer spring and damper rates. The 18-inch alloy wheels are fitted with 225/40 and 245/35 profile rubber in the front and rear respectively. An upgraded braking system adds larger, perforated, brake discs and callipers with ‘Mercedes-Benz’ branding.
The engine line-up increases with the addition of the SLK 250 BlueEfficiency (BE). Both the current SLK 200 and new SLK 250 are powered by a 4-cylinder, 1.8-litre petrol engine that develops 135 kW and 150 kW in the different models respectively. The new SLK 250 BE is equipped with an automatic transmission as standard and consumes 7.3 l/100km on average. From standstill it reaches 100 km/h in 6.6 seconds and has a top speed of 243 km/h.
A larger 3.5-litre V6 powers the SLK 350 BlueEfficiency and offers 225 kW, a 0 to 100 km/h sprint of 5.6 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h. Mercedes claim over all consumption of 8.3 l/100km and the title of most economical V6 in its segment. The V6 has been revised with the company’s 3rd-generation direct injection system, piezo injectors and multi-spark ignition.
The list of standard equipment for the SLK range has grown too, with some of the highlights being: Attention Assist; electric parking brake; headbags in the doors; LED tail lights; tyre pressure loss warning system; daytime running lamps; roll-over bars with anodised aluminium inserts; sun-reflecting leather for cooler seats in strong sunshine.
Similarly, the options list has increased too. Buyers can choose from: ‘Solar red’ ambient lighting; ‘Comand Online’ with internet access, 7-inch colour display and central controller; Keyless-Go; Parktronic with Parking Guidance; a tinted Panoramic vario-roof; Panoramic vario-roof with switchable transparency; AMG Carbon fibre trim; Harmon Kardon surround sound.
