The Mini Vision concept, as the name may well suggest, hints at the future of the Mini Cooper hatchback that is expected to be shown at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show.
The Mini Vision Concept suggests a “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it” design policy, and who could blame the brand for not wanting to tamper with what’s been a successful recipe to-date. Key features of the concept include the hexagonal radiator grille with integrated fog lights, LED headlights bordered by ring-shaped daytime running lights and a large tail-light design. The LED headlights are expected to be optional extras for the production version of the 2014 Mini Cooper, while the fog lights are likely to sit lower and wider in the front bumper to provide better illumination.
The interior design of the Vision concept is a futuristic one, with ‘floating’ centre stack that houses the central display. The display can switch between classic, analogue or a 3-D style view, while the ‘Driving Experience Control’ switch allows the driver to choose between a pure and focused or fully-interconnected mode. The two modes are expressed in different colours using calm, clear light and dynamic, energy-charged shades.
While the retro-inspired round gauges remain, there is now a more conventional layout for the driver’s instruments behind the steering wheel. The ‘lounge’ seats feature piping and add the finishing touch to the unique interior ambience, which Mini say reflects an open space.
The Mini Vision is constructed using lightweight composite materials borrowed from parent company BMW’s i Series models. Aerodynamic design elements include the air intakes and outlets fore and aft each front wheel arch, an aerodynamic wheel design, exterior mirrors and roof spoiler.
