Today no car must serve a single purpose, which is reason why Audi’s TT – a car we thought couldn’t be more single minded – is up for expansion. The new TT, in short, will have to evolve into either a CLA or Range Rover Evoque rival as part of Rupert Stadler’s (Audi’s chairman) 22-billion euro growth plan – one that could see ten new models launched by 2020.
Today there are three clear routes for expansion within the TT range: The Sportback (shown recently at the Paris Motor Show), a Shooting Brake concept or the high-riding Offroad (shown here). Of the three it is believed the five-door practicality offered by the Sportback and Offroad make them more realistic than the two-door Shooting Brake.
With all TT variants based on the versatile MQB platform, proportions can be altered without requiring a complete re-design. The Offroad and Sportback are roughly 130mm longer than the TT – dimensions that pose their own problem, particularly for the Offroad which is now nearing on Q3 size, but with not as much ride height.
Currently workable prototypes are doing some low-speed publicity which to my mind firmly establishes their relevance with production dates that can’t be further away than Q2 of 2015. We’re quite excited and Audi could definitely do with something sexier than the Q3.
