First Drive: Volkswagen Polo Vivo 2015

Polo Vivo 2015

The Polo Vivo has been South Africa’s best-selling passenger car for the past four years but VW are not letting the grass grow under their feet and have introduced a number of progressive cosmetic changes that should be enough to see its success continue.

Unlike the Polo which underwent significant mechanical revisions earlier this year, the more affordable Polo Vivo’s exterior updates are confined mostly to the headlights and grille. A new shift lever and leather pouch surround have been introduced while Trendline and Comfortline models come with a height adjustable seat to overlook the new instrument cluster. Bluetooth and USB are optional on the two base derivatives. We’re most pleased that ABS and remote locking is now standard.

Engines have seen little revision and the fact that the Polo Vivo is Volkswagen’s only turbo charged engine in the company’s entire range speaks volumes about how dated it is, not just among its own brand but also in comparison to the competition.

In Volkswagen’s favour is a trusted name, a loyal following and strong resale value which should ensure that the locally-built Vivo stays ahead of the newer trinkets and technology featured elsewhere.
