For some reason the updated Volkswagen Jetta didn’t qualify for a typical launch event so at this point we’re unable to provide any driving impressions. What we can tell you about one of Volkswagen’s best-selling cars (globally and locally) is that the revamped, modern shape is 10 per cent more aerodynamic and the interior spruced up by the fitment of new equipment.
Styling changes to the front comprise of a new grille and smoother lines around the bumper’s larger air intake which at the same time exaggerate its low and wide appearance. At night the Jetta retains a purposeful look through the development in light technology with the ubiquitous LED treatment. Rear styling echoes that of the front but don’t feel bad if you can’t spot the differences immediately, the goal has been to work within a familiar and established design framework.
Chrome and high-gloss black materials feature more prominently, on-board settings operate through revised multi-function displays and there’s a higher quality feel to the steering wheel – the last one was hard and thin. Among the six airbags are two new head-thorax airbags located in the upper side window which improve the rollover protection.
Nothing new mechanically, the Jetta ships in a choice of five engines: three petrol units -1.2 TSI 77kW, 1.4 TSI 90kW and 1.4 TSI 118kW plus two diesel units: 1.6 TDI 77kW and a 2.0 TDI 103kW. While the 1.2-litre offers ample performance it is confined to manual transmission which hands the advantage to the 1.4-litre 7-speed DSG model. The Jetta comes in three trims; Trendline, Comfortline and Highline while features like bigger alloys, Vienna leather, sunroof, rear parking camera and keyless entry come at added expense.
