Volkswagen has unveiled their latest dashboard architecture at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas. Shown to the public for the first time, the Golf R Touch uses a myriad motion sensors to do away with traditional buttons and controls and further integrate a user’s smartphone or tablet. In doing so Volkswagen claims to have created a safer driving environment while expanding room for greater personalisation. As if being able to operate your smartphone behind the wheel is ever encouraged…
As usual there’s a screen positioned in the top half of the dashboard but this time stretched to around 25cm and lower down sits another 20cm screen that is responsible the more day-to-day operations. But anybody can fit two screens and claim to have changed the face of motoring; what makes Golf R Touch that little bit more advanced is the gesture control unit.
Utilising 3D cameras positioned around the car it allows the driver to do neat tricks like open or close the sunroof by swiping their hand along the roof lining or bring up detailed adjustment for the seats onto one of the screens by brushing a hand down the seat rest. As for the personalisation aspect, Golf R Touch comes equipped with 16.7 million different colour combinations which should mean it will be adept at matching your mood at any time.
