BMW could introduce touchscreen infotainment systems in their upcoming cars. This big reveal is according to Adrian van Hooydonk, director of BMW group design.
“We will see some big steps in how you operate the vehicle, and voice-control and head-up display is a big part of that. But, of course, using an iPad sitting on the sofa is easier than when you’re on the motorway. This is a challenge that we’re working on, and there will be a role for rotary-controlled iDrive for the foreseeable future, even as we introduce touch-screen.”
Adrian then went on to say that the evolution of curved screens would be a major driving force behind the project and that he is looking for “seamless integration between display and shape.” – flat surfaces are unattractive to interior design.
That doesn’t mean the beloved iDrive controller we know so well is about to be replaced and should continue to play a role alongside expanded functions in voice control and heads-up display.
Are we happy? Generally we dislike touch screens; they never work as swiftly as rotary commands, are prone to glare and require considerable stretch to operate. A curved design, placed more ergonomically and in conjunction with iDrive… that could work!
