New car pricing doesn’t often paint a smile on our face but the 2017 Renault KWID launched in South Africa has successfully sifted through the clutter and emerged out the other side as a product possessing all the required hallmarks of an instant smash hit.
Aimed at the heart of one of the few growing car segments, Renault KWID blends the functional with the unexpected. Not to mention its credible badge will see it find a strong footing against some lesser-known brands.
With models like the Clio and Sandero already in its quiver, Renault’s ability to downsize is beyond doubt but even so, KWID seems too good to be true.
Renault’s small-car formula is enviable. New KWID is powered by a 1.0-litre normally aspirated 3 cylinder engine with tested fuel consumption below 6l/100km. With the front wheels pulling a low 1100kg kerb mass through a punchy-cogged 5-speed gearbox, KWID tackles inclines and spontaneous overtakes with unbridled enthusiasm.
Suited to urban and rural surrounds, the new Renault KWID could almost pull off a crossover moniker thanks to 180mm ground clearance and plenty of vertical travel into those cavernous arches. A small turning circle assists manoeuvrability and the raised driving position endows KWID with big-car attitude.
“The KWID is an entirely new car which offers a lot of surprises both inside and out, including features from the next segment up,” … David Durand, Head of KWID Styling, Renault
Between A and C pillars, the Renault KWID can carry five adults with no complaints yet it’s the 300 litre boot which is its most outstanding USP considering that 160 is the norm for this segment. The interior design will suit all tastes; practical colours and organised interface are not to be taken for granted in this price bracket.
The model range is clearly defined between Expression and Dynamique but the essential bits like powertrain and safety (driver’s airbag) remain. Dynamique models can be identified from the outside by the fog lights and by a 7-inch MediaNav system on the inside. Yet Expression ticks a few boxes of its own with air conditioning and front electric windows as standard items. Bluetooth telephony, 2 speakers and a USB input will ensure that KWID stays abreast of your next few smartphone upgrades.
Considering that insurance eats into a large portion of those monthly on-road payments, Renault offers free comprehensive insurance cover for the first 12 months to all KWID owners. Both derivatives come standard with a 5-year/150 000 km mechanical warranty and a 6-year anti-corrosion warranty. Services take place at 15 000 km intervals.
