With a recent downpour of entry-level models now on sale in the form of Renault KWID and Volkswagen up! the Indian car company Tata believes it can take on the segment with its bravely styled Indica Flash that might appeal to some but not all.
Priced at R124 995, the India Flash picks up several low-cost cosmetic enhancements. Indica Flash comes with black stripes applied to its relatively fuss-free lines while previous steel wheels are replaced by an equally small alloy set that vanish inside wheel arches designed for bobbing along rough roads.
Bluetooth and USB keep it alive in a spec debate with the European and French brands while a leather interior is rare at the price but comes embodied with the Flash Logo as a sure-fire way to make it look a bit tacky.
Unlike the Tata Bolt which received the brand’s modern turbo charged engine (albeit quite underpowered) the Indica Flash uses the 1.4-litre engine with 56kW/110Nm, a 5-speed gearbox and 6.5l/100km. By comparison the Revotron 1.2-litre turbo engine in the Bolt does 66kW and 140Nm. Read our review of that car here.
“We are confident that the Indica Flash special edition is going to be a success as it is a true value-for-money offering aimed at first-time buyers and those with a limited budget,” said Kyri Michael, the CEO of Accordian Investments which markets and distributes Tata passenger cars and light commercial vehicles in South Africa.
The Indica Flash is covered by a 3-year/100 000km warranty and has a 2-year/45 000km service plan plus road side assistance.
