Ford re-wrote the record books this past Saturday, 27 February 2010, by gathering South African Ford enthusiasts from around the country together for the largest recorded Ford parade in history.

The event, which took place at Phakisa Freeway in the Free State, saw 586 Fords come together to participate in a spectacular parade lap for entry into the Guinness Book of World Records. Ford owners from around the country were invited to bring their vehicles to the Welkom-based race circuit to complete the 3. 2km route in celebration of the Blue Oval and its illustrious history.

“It was a fantastic day, the turnout was phenomenal and we’ve been overwhelmed by the loyalty and enthusiasm of all the die-hard Ford fans who joined us,” Ford marketing manager, Ben Pillay said after the record attempt.

A vast array of Ford models lined the circuit with everything from new Fiestas to Ford Granadas coming together in support of the Ford brand. Leading the way was a Model T Ford, as the first production Ford model (famous for its visionary’s assertion that it would be available in any colour as long as it was black), it proved a fitting car to head the notable chain of Ford machinery. Other Ford exotica helping to make up the record numbers included the country’s only Focus RS and iconic Ford GT from Lazarus Motor Company.

“The variety was unbelievable and really shows the depth of Ford’s history in South Africa,” continued Pillay. “It was a nostalgic day and an event that won’t soon be forgotten.”

The day proved so successful that a recount was required, with the numbers far surpassing all initial expectations. The final tally was recorded at 586, exceeding the previous record by more than four times.

British supercar manufacturer and challenger for the production car world land speed record, Keating, will have its 416 km/h TKR supercar on display at this year’s MPH Show, featuring Top Gear Live at London’s Earls Court on 5 November.

In the first of two runs on the Salt Lake Flats in California last month, the remarkable 7,0-litre, 1 323 kW Keating TKR smashed the current record, adding an extra 5 km/h to the top speed of existing title holder, the Shelby Aero TT. Now the Manchester based company must do it again to ensure entry in the Guinness Book of World Records.

But before it returns to California, the breathtaking Keating TKR will make its MPH show debut in London tomorrow in front of capacity crowds.

Tony Keating, founder of Keating Supercars, said: “The Keating TKR realizes our ambition to take on the world’s finest supercars and win. This car rivals them all for looks, handling, performance and exclusivity. And best of all, it’s British.”

The awesome piece of engineering will be on the Reef Paint Shop stand at MPH The Prestige and Performance Motor Show. Reef Paint Shop Managing Director, Andrew Figini, said: “We are delighted to have the association with Keating and be part of the MPH Show. We stripped the original red color and replaced with a gloss black finish with custom flair in candy-brandy wine before clear-coating – it looks spectacular when the light hits it.”
