Mercedes-Benz has introduced and commenced production of the new Mercedes-Benz A-Class E-Cell. It’s being built to a limited production run of just 500 and only available in countries such as France, Germany and the Netherlands.

It’s the third electric car Mercedes-Benz has brought out, following the B-Class F-Cell and the supercar-derived SLS AMG E-Cell. In contrast to the SLS E-Cell, the A-Class is pedestrian in terms of performance, but still offers the same advanced lithium-ion battery pack technology.

Two lithium-ion batteries with 36 kWh storage capacity provide the electric motor with a peak power output of 71 kW and a constant power output of 51 kW. Using a water-glycol based cooling system, the battery pack is kept at a stable operating temperature to maximise short-term range, as well as the battery’s lifecycle.

The fully charged batteries provide a range of 200 kilometers, which is more than adequate for most Europeans daily around-town routine. The A-Class E-Cell can be charged using power from a conventional single-phase, 230-Volt, wall socket or three-phase power source if available. Charging time is 8 hours, but if connected to one of the new roadside charging stations available in selected parts of Europe where the car will be sold, the A-Class E-Cell can be fully charged from empty in just 3 hours.

The Mercedes-Benz A-Class E-Cell also comes with a usual range of luxury features typical to the A-Class range.
