Toyota Announces Large Investment For SA

Posted on 20 January 2011 by Scott Hayes

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) announced a R363 million investment into a new Parts Distribution Warehouse in the Ekurhuleni municipality earlier this week. The warehouse is being developed in two phases and will serve TSAM’s local and export markets.

The new warehouse represents the largest single investment by TSAM in the Gauteng Province and it follows a five year R8 billion investment programme into its manufacturing facilities in Prospecton, Durban. Upon completion the new facility will cover 80 000 m2 and it will be the largest of its kind in Africa.

According to Van Zyl the new Parts Distribution Warehouse will allow the company to further improve the availability of service and replacement parts on all of its vehicles, while the efficiencies gained from its world class management systems will serve to contain the cost of these parts.

The first phase of the new Parts Distribution Warehouse will open in May 2012 with the first round of daily deliveries to the more than 220 Toyota, Lexus and Hino dealerships in Southern Africa. This phase will feature 39 000 m2 of warehouse space and 3 000 m2 of office space. More than 800 of TSAM’s staff compliment of 7 793 employees will be based here. The second phase will include a further 38 000 m2 of warehouse space and is scheduled for completion by or before 2015.

“Toyota South Africa will remain an integral member of Toyota Motor Corporation and will continue to produce vehicles in South Africa. In making this a reality we believe that the government, through the actions of the Department of Trade and Industry and the Automotive Production and Development Programme (APDP) has created a stable and predictable environment in which we as manufacturers can make investments such as the one that we are announcing today” says Van Zyl.

Toyota Teams Up With Arctic Trucks In South Africa

Posted on 07 September 2010 by Scott Hayes

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) and Arctic Trucks – the legendary converters of Hilux and other Toyota products – have signed an agreement to convert six South African built Hilux pick-ups for use in Antarctica.

Of these vehicles, two will undergo full AT44 conversions (see specifications below). Another two will be converted to AT44 specification, but with full 6×6 configuration. These four Hilux vehicles will operate as back up vehicles in the gruelling Antarctic Ski Challenge to the south pole, to be held at the end of the year as part of the Extreme World Races series. The fifth Hilux, also to AT44 specification, will be built for the Indian National Centre Antarctic and Ocean Research, while Hilux number six will be built to AT38 specification.

These Hilux models boast with several world firsts, having driven thousands of kilometres to both poles, not least as part of the BBC’s Top Gear expedition to the magnetic North Pole. An Arctic Trucks Hilux was also the first to drive over the entire ice shelf in Greenland, while many Arctic Trucks Hilux models do thankless service as backup and support vehicles for major scientific, climbing, skiing, hiking and rescue missions. The vehicles have been chosen as back up vehicles for the various Antarctic missions due to its proven durability as the only approved pick-up for use on this continent. Its large tyres offer the same abilities as traditional track driven ice vehicles, but with a CO2 footprint that is a margin of the more traditional modes of ice transport.

The conversions, which have been designed and perfected by Iceland-based Arctic Trucks, will be done under their supervision at TSAM’s Johannesburg based workshops in partnership with 4×4 Mega World. The process, which is already under way, will provide Arctic Trucks with a cost effective way of converting the Hilux bakkies before shipment through Cape Town to Antarctica.

Andrew Kirby, Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing at TSAM, says “Not only does the Arctic Truck conversion showcase the strengths of the Hilux in extreme conditions, but the various Antarctic projects’ aim at creating awareness of environmental issues also underscore Toyota’s strong commitment to sustainable mobility and the protection of our habitat.”

The Arctic Trucks Hilux models are the product of two decades of research and real world testing, with many of these converted vehicles in use in some of the world’s harshest conditions. Arctic Trucks vehicles are in use in Antarctica and can also be found in some of the driest and hottest deserts in the world.

Arctic Trucks started operations in 1990 as a division of the Toyota distributor to Iceland. The Reykjavik-based convertor of Hilux, Fortuner, Prado and Land Cruiser models soon became an independent company, while building on the Icelandic tradition of converting 4×4 vehicles to handle the hugely varying conditions in this country.

Hilux and other Toyota vehicles with the hallowed AT-name soon proved popular with adventurers, scientists, overland enthusiasts and even companies that operate in harsh conditions for its ability to go virtually anywhere and, more importantly, endure trip after trip without the need for major mechanical overhauls.

One can easily identify an AT Hilux by the ride height, flared wheel arches and large tyres, with the tyre size being the cue for the different model names. AT conversions are done on all Hilux versions, including the double, single and extended cab versions. All AT Hilux models are fitted with running boards and brackets, a fire extinguisher, torque wrench and a first aid kit.

AT35
Sporting 35-inch tyres, flared wheel arches and a suspension raised by 40 mm, the AT35 is a popular choice amongst hunters, 4×4 enthusiasts, farmers and park rangers across the world. The 35 x 12.5 R15 tyres are fitted to 15 x 10 wheel rims and are key to greater off road capabilities, a softer ride, higher seating and, thanks to the tyres that can be deflated for soft sand or snow, better traction off the beaten track.

AT38
This is the version that transported the BBC Top Gear team to the magnetic North Pole and took some beating at the hands of Jeremy Clarkson. Fitted with Toyota’s 3.0 D-4D diesel engine with a power rating of 126 kW and 360 Nm, the AT38 Hilux rides on 38 x 15.5 R15 tyres and 15 x 12.5 rims. The AT38 can be ordered with either an automatic or manual gearbox, and can be fitted with a heavy duty suspension. Heavy duty differential locks on both axles can be ordered, while the fuel tank can be expanded by 55 litres (for a combined 110 litres) or to 160 litres (two 80 litre fuel tanks). Other added extras include a compressed air tank with waterproof compressor, an extra heavy duty dual air filtration system, a 24V generator and more power outlets, as requested. Ground clearance is 420 mm under the vehicle’s belly (minimum of 300 mm).

AT44
The grand daddy designed for the harshest conditions is the AT44. This is the vehicle that drove from the Novo airbase on Antarctica to the South Pole and back in 2008/09. The AT44 rides on 15 x 16 rims with massive 44 x 18.5 R15 tyres. These large wheels can be deflated to allow the AT44, with 1.5 ton carrying capacity, to traverse ultra-soft ground surfaces. The vehicle can be ordered with manual or automatic gearbox, while the transfer case is fitted with a trawler gear offering a 5.132:1 ratio in low range. The AT44 can be fitted with two 80 litre fuel tanks or with a combination of 135-litre and 55-litre tanks for a total capacity of 190-litres. An Arctic Truck trailer can be fitted that will offer as much as 1 350-litres of fuel to be carried with the vehicle. Ground clearance is a cavernous 480 mm under the vehicle’s belly (minimum of 360 mm). The AT44 is fitted with 100% differential locks on both axles and a heavy duty suspension. As with the AT38 the AT44 offers a compressed air tank with waterproof compressor, an extra heavy duty dual air filtration system, as well as a 24V generator.

6×6
This specialist machine offers the same features as any of the AT-models, but with a much longer load bay, especially when ordered as single cab. Off road carrying capacity is 3 tonnes and the fuel capacity can be stretched to 400-litres. The 6×6 can be ordered with any of the AT-conversions and is powered by the same 3.0 D-4D. Rear brakes are drums on both axles and coil spring suspension is used on all wheels. The 6×6 is 6.365 mm long and offers 100% differential locks on all axles.

Toyota Prius Production To Be Slowed

Posted on 17 March 2010 by Scott Hayes

Toyota’s popular environmental crusader, the Prius hybrid, will have its production levels slashed this month as the Japanese manufacturer struggles to address claims of braking system problems.

Nearly 450 000 third-generation Prius models were recalled earlier this year amid claims the brakes could fail to properly function when the car switched between petrol and electric mode, or was driven on particularly slippery or bumpy roads. The issue has caused a sales slump for Toyota with the US market — the Prius’ single most important market — recording a 40 per cent fall in Prius purchases.

Reports from Tokyo say Toyota will trim 10 per cent from Prius production levels to meet the slowing demand. Prius production reached a peak output of 50 000 units per month back in October 2009, after going on sale in May the same year. It’s understood that figure will now be scaled back to around 45 000 units a month. In the Prius’ home market of Japan, the petrol-electric hybrid has been a sales success, and thanks to state subsidies and tax incentives, has topped the nation’s best seller list for the past nine months.

“The outlook for Prius demand is uncertain,” a Toyota spokesperson said. In the US, regulators are investigating more than 60 reports of customer issues with the Prius’ braking system as Toyota’s investigation of the problem continues.

If you own a third-generation Toyota Prius, you can find recall information here.

Toyota SA Announces Accelerator Recall Campaign

Posted on 10 February 2010 by Scott Hayes

Toyota South Africa Motors (TSAM) today announced the vehicles to be included in its recall service campaign to correct the accelerator mechanism in these cars. The list of affected vehicles is the result of an exhaustive technical study which covered all Toyota vehicles on sale in South Africa. The affected passenger vehicle models are:

  • Toyota Corolla (February 2007 to January 2010) – 45 040 vehicles
  • Toyota Auris (June 2006 to January 2010) – 6 665 vehicles
  • Toyota Verso (October 2008 to January 2010) – 841 vehicles

This equates to a total of 52 546 Toyota vehicles that will form part of this campaign.

Toyota will start contacting customers of the affected vehicles immediately. All Toyota dealers in South Africa and the countries that TSAM serve will be involved. These include Botswana, Namibia, Lesotho and Swaziland. Owners will be given the opportunity to contact their nearest Toyota dealer at their convenience and schedule a time for the repair. The action will take place as a precautionary measure,  despite the fact that the problem has not surfaced to the same effect in the hot and dry climate of South Africa.

In more detail, the problem relates to the operation between the mechanism’s friction shoe that provides pedal feel and ensures pedal stability, and the adjoining surface. The corrective action will take the form of a small precision-cut steel plate that will be placed in the assembly to alleviate the friction between the friction shoe and adjoining surface. This will prevent the problem from surfacing in vehicles equipped with this steel bar for the life of the vehicle.

Repairs will start from 23 February 2010 and the corrective action should take less than an hour, but could take longer if the dealer is experiencing very high levels of service calls. TSAM will honour the full cost of the repair and no owner will be required to pay, regardless of the state of his or her service plan, warranty or the ownership status of the vehicle.

“We would like to apologise to all Toyota vehicle owners for the uncertainty and inconvenience that this process may have caused. We value the trust and confidence that Toyota owners have put in our brand over the past five decades and we will do everything in our power to honour that,” says Dr Johan van Zyl, President and CEO of TSAM.

As further support to the campaign, concerned customers can visit www.toyota.co.za or phone the Customer Contact Centre on 0800-139-111 for up to date information on the recall service campaign.

In an unrelated service action, TSAM has decided to recall all new generation Prius models (August 2009 to February 2010) for a software upgrade to the electronic brake system. This action involves 216 vehicles. This upgrade will address the delayed brake feel on slippery surfaces that has been experienced elsewhere in the world. Given the small volume of new generation vehicles affected Toyota is already in the process of contacting each Prius owner to inform them of this upgrade and schedule a convenient appointment time at their closest Prius dealer.
