News: BMW and Sipho Mabona create art with the 1 Series

Following in the brush stokes of Esther Mahlangu’s world famous artwork on limited edition BMWs like the BMW 5 Series and BMW 7 Series, BMW South Africa recently partnered with Sipho Mabona and the newly updated BMW 1 Series. The only difference, albeit a big one, between these artists is that Sipho Mabona’s fascination rests primarily in the far Eastern theories and mysteries of origami.

Through origami this ambitious 20-year expresses his exploratory quests in transformation, transition and transients and for this particular display, working alongside Anika van der Merwe – a renowned stained-glass artist – Mabona created bespoke large canvas works to adorn the gallery walls. Behind this body of work, the reliefs representing parts of a woman, a dragonfly and a cicada serve as a metaphor for the agility, power and elegance of the 2020 BMW 1 Series.

The BMW 1 Series formed an integral part of the public’s First Thursday Movement at the Braamfontein Gallery as well as in Cape Town’s CBD.
