BMW 3 Series Range Now With EfficientDynamics

Posted on 18 November 2010 by Scott

The BMW 3 Series Sedan already offers South African drivers a good balance between performance and economy, thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics. However, with the incorporation of additional BMW EfficientDynamics technologies into the vehicles, the BMW 320d, 323i, 325i and 330i (320i from January 2011) mean the range is now more efficient than ever before, thereby reducing CO2 emissions and the corresponding CO2 tax.

Whilst all 6-cylinder BMW 3 Series models have featured the on-demand operation of engine ancillary units (map controlled water and oil pumps) since launch in 2005, many other BMW EfficientDynamics measures have not been implemented in South Africa on the BMW 3 Series up until now.

Now all BMW 3 Series Sedan models, except the BMW 335i and the BMW 330d, will feature Brake Energy Regeneration, along with an automatic coupler for the climate control compressor and map-controlled oil pumps (only on 6-cylinder models) as standard, in order to save additional fuel. In addition, the BMW 320d with manual transmission will also be equipped with a gear-shift point indicator, which shows the driver the optimal point to shift gear for maximum economy. The end result is an overall fuel consumption figure, in the EU cycle, which decreases from 5.4 l/100km to just 4.7 l/100km. At the same time, CO2 emissions are reduced from 140 g/km to just 125 g/km. Thanks to BMW’s EfficientDynamics innovations, these figures are made possible whilst still enjoying the benefit of a car with 135 kW and a 0 – 100km/h sprint time of 7.5 seconds.

Improvements to the rest of the 3 Series range are as follows:

Model Fuel Consumption Emissions
BMW 320i (M) 7.8 l/100km (was 8.1 l/100km) 182 g/km (was 189 g/km)
BMW 320i (A) 7.8 l/100km (was 8.1 l/100km) 182 g/km (was 189g/km)
BMW 323i (M) 8.2 l/100km (was 8.4 l/100km) 191 g/km (was 203 g/km)
BMW 323i (A) 8.6 l/100km (was 8.8 l/100km) 200 g/km (was 212 g/km)
BMW 325i (M) 8.2 l/100km (was 8.4 l/100km) 191 g/km (was 203 g/km)
BMW 325i (A) 8.6 l/100km (was 8.8 l/100km) 200 g/km (was 212 g/km)
BMW 330i (M) 8.6 l/100km (was 8.7 l/100km) 200 g/km (was 210 g/km)
BMW 330i (A) 8.8 l/100km (was 9 l/100km) 205 g/km (was 216 g/km)

These changes in the BMW 3 Series range are also carried over in the BMW 3 Series coupe and convertible range to similar effect.

Thanks to BMW EfficientDynamics technology, the average carbon emissions per kilometer of the BMW EU fleet equates to 150 g/km. This corresponds to a fuel consumption of 5.9 l/100 km, achieved despite an average performance of 125 kW.
